Description
Indications
- Hyperthyroidism, Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, Thyroid storm
Administration
- Methimazole is usually given in 3 equal doses at approximately 8 hours intervals.
- Adult: Initial dose of 15mg to 60 mg daily, may be given in divided doses or as a single dose.
- In Euthyroid patients: The usual dose is 5mg to 15mg daily.
- Maintenance dose: 5mg to 15mg daily.
- Children: Initial dose is 400mcg per kg body weight, for maintenance, this dose may be halved, or as directed by a physician.
- Administer with a meal.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to methimazole or any component of the formulation. Refer to manufacturer labeling for further details.
Common side-effects
- GI disturbances, Thyrotoxic crisis, Skin rashes, Nausea & vomiting
