Description
Indications
- Depakene is indicated as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy in the treatment of patients with complex partial seizures that occur either in isolation or in association with other types of seizures.
- Indicated as sole and adjunctive therapy in the treatment of simple and complex seizures, and adjunctively in patients with multiple seizure types that include absence seizures.
Administration
- Administer with food.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to valproic acid, divalproex derivatives, or any component of the formulation. Refer to manufacturer labeling for further detail.
Common side-effects
- Dizziness, Drowsiness, Nervousness, Insomnia, Tremor, Hallucinations
Reproductive Considerations / Warnings
- Valproate is contraindicated for prophylaxis of migraine headaches in pregnant patients.
- Valproate should not be used to treat pregnant patients with epilepsy or bipolar disorder unless other medications have failed to provide adequate symptom control or are otherwise unacceptable.
- Valproate can cause major congenital malformations, particularly neural tube defects (e.g. spina bifida).
