Description
Indications
- Depakote ER is indicated as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy in the treatment of patients with focal (partial) onset and generalized onset seizures.
- Treatment of bipolar disorders.
- Prevention of migraine.
Administration
- Administer with food.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to valproic acid, divalproex derivatives, or any component of the formulation. Refer to manufacturer labeling for further detail.
Common side-effects
- Dizziness, Drowsiness, Nervousness, Insomnia, Tremors, Hallucinations
Reproductive Considerations / Warnings
- Valproate is contraindicated for prophylaxis of migraine headaches in pregnant patients.
- Valproate should not be used to treat pregnant patients with epilepsy or bipolar disorder unless other medications have failed to provide adequate symptom control or are otherwise unacceptable.
- Valproate can cause major congenital malformations, particularly neural tube defects (e.g. spina bifida).
